1875年底，凡高和提奥都回到了父母居住的埃顿过圣诞节。凡高是在没有得到允许的的情况下擅自离开的，而圣诞节正是公司业务最繁忙的时候。这一行为直接促使凡高被解雇。自从凡高失恋以后，就对工作失去了当初的热情。比较有代表性的表现就是，他经常嘲讽顾客买画的品位，他还经常说服顾客不要买那些他不喜欢的画（可能正是这些凡高讨厌的画可以赚钱）。他还不愿把自己喜爱的画（可能是真品）卖给那些虽然有钱，但毫无品位的人。反正种种让人不可理解的行为使顾客和同事都对他有很大的意见。他被解雇成了必然。连他自己都清楚这一点：“当苹果成熟了，只要微微一阵风就会掉到地上”。本来前途无量的年轻人（好几个叔叔都是大画商）就要失业了，但真正的打击还远没有到来。

Letter 050 Paris, 10 January 1876 巴黎 1876年1月10日

Dear Theo, I have not again written to you since we saw each other. 我们见面之后我还没给你写过信呢（凡高和弟弟提奥在埃顿过圣诞时见面了） Meanwhile something happened to me that was not entirely 完全地 unforeseen 意外的 . When I saw Mr. Boussod （此人是凡高所在的古比尔公司的新东家，是古比尔先生 Mr.Goupil 的女婿）again, I asked him His Excellence 阁下？ if he approved of 赞成、批准 my being employed in the house for another year, and told His Excellence that I hoped that he had nothing serious to reproach 责备 me with? But, alas 唉呀 , it was the case, and His Excellence has forced me, as it were, to say that I would leave on 1st.
